SAAS is a specialist community based alcohol agency. Our aim is to reduce the level of alcohol related harm within Sheffield.

To this end we offer advice, information and counselling to anyone concerned about their own or someone else's use of alcohol. We also offer training to organisations and individuals. Providing training helps us to further our aim to reduce harm, by increasing the community's level of knowledge and skills relating to alcohol and drug use.

Who Is Training For?

SAAS offers specialist training which may be of interest to:

  • Any agency working with clients who may be experiencing problems with alcohol and or other substances
  • Organisations wishing to implement workplace policies relating to alcohol / drug use
  • Generic counsellors who wish to further understand this specialist area
  • Any individual wishing to increase their knowledge and awareness of alcohol / drugs

Short Courses:

A programme of short one or two day courses is available. Some courses are accredited by the Open College Network. The programme offers a range of topics from alcohol and drug awareness and specialist alcohol / drug counselling skills to stress and time management.

In-House Training:

SAAS can design and deliver training specifically tailored for your organisation's needs. The service includes a full training needs assessment if required.

In house training can be made up from a combination of short courses (many accredited by the Open College Network), or, if you prefer, a new course can be designed to meet your particular needs.

Accredited Alcohol & Drug Counselling Course:

We offer a two-year specialist alcohol and drug counselling training programme, accredited by the Open College Network.

The course offers a rare opportunity to develop specialist skills and gain experience of carrying a counselling caseload, within a specialist substance use agency.

Our Training Approach:

SAAS uses a participative and experiential approach to training. This enables participants to draw on their resources as people and workers. It places responsibility for learning with the participant, whilst the role of the trainer is to provide an environment conducive to learning and to facilitate the learning process.

Training methods may include formal taught sessions, facilitated group work, role-play and discussion. In all our training we aim to take into account the needs of the individual and to promote anti-discriminatory practice.

We are committed to the continual improvement of all our training, and following any training delivered for your organisation, an evaluation will be conducted and a report sent to you if required.

Trainers:

All course facilitators are qualified and / or suitable experienced trainers who are also currently working in the alcohol / drugs field. SAAS staff are expected to maintain the highest professional standards whilst delivering training and work in line with the agency's training and equal opportunities policies.
